Moderate hike near Moena – Valfreda and Forca Rossa

If you are looking for a hike surrounded only by unspoilt nature with breathtaking 360-degree views, this is the one for you. It takes a bit of stamina, but every drop of sweat is rewarded with stunning beauty.

Start: Col de Mez car park – from the San Pellegrino Pass

  • Duration: 5–6 hours
  • Elevation gain: 650 m
  • Difficulty: moderate

It’s a 20-minute drive from our hotel: past the San Pellegrino Pass, take the road to the Flora Alpina hut and you will quickly reach the Col de Mez car park. Follow the signs for Valfreda and, after a first idyllic stretch through a forest of pines, firs and larches, you will reach the famous tabià, old wooden houses once used by shepherds and now holiday homes.

After the tabià the climb begins: never difficult or excessive, but steady – after all, you have 650 metres of elevation gain ahead of you. A view opens up towards the high pastures, which you will cross accompanied only by the wind. Following the signs for trail no. 694, always on good, clearly visible ground, you will alternate steeper stretches that require breath and legs with more restful sections. You will hear the whistles of marmots and often find them just a few metres away.

After the meadows, with your destination in sight and the ground turning a reddish brown, the final stretch begins – perhaps the hardest, not so much because of the gradient as the accumulated fatigue. But reaching the top will be priceless. A spectacular view, sheer walls, the cold wind at 2,600 metres and the scarcity of hikers, truly rare in Val di Fassa, will reward your effort: the Franzedaz valley, the Civetta and Monte Pelmo, the Sorapiss, the Tofane, the Cristallo, the Croda da Lago – in short, all the wonders of the Dolomites at a single glance. With a little luck you might even spot some ibex!
